Herbs for
Lughnasadh by Unity
As we are
heading towards Lughnasadh, I thought I'd have a look at the magical properties
of a few herbs and plants that are not only growing at this time of year, but
that are associated with this, the first harvest festival of the year. I'll
also give you a few ideas on how to use these plants in your Lughnasadh
celebrations.
Marigolds - Calendula
(various)
planetary
ruler: Sun
Element:
Fire
Gender:
Masculine
Magical
properties: Psychic powers, dreams, protection, luck, happiness, gossip
Marigolds,
being herbs of the Sun are perfect to include in your Lughnasadh celebrations.
There are various varieties but they all have the beautiful Sunshine colours of
gold, yellow and orange.
Marigolds
growing beside your front door will protect your home from negative energies
entering, if that’s not possible a spell bag of the dried petals can be hung
above the door instead.
Add the
dried petals to dream pillows or sachets and keep under your pillow at night to
bring prophetic dreams and protect you from nightmares.
The petals
can be added to your Lughnasadh incense or pre-ritual bath. They could also be
added to your home-made loaf or you might like to try the following recipe from
'A Kitchen Witch's World of Magical Plants and Herbs' by our own lovely Rachel
Patterson as part of your Lughnasadh feast. It could also be used to increase
your psychic powers.
Marigold Tea
1 pint apple
juice
1/2 cup of
sugar
2 tbsp.
marigold flowers
1 orange,
sliced
4 geranium
petals
Warm all the
ingredients together for 7-10 minutes on a low heat until the sugar has
dissolved. Strain and keep chilled. Drink cold with ice.
Lughnasadh
Blessings
